Migraines and Oral Health Are Often Connected

Posted on 11/1/2024 by Dr. Robert Walker
woman having a headache and holding her hands up to her templesHave you ever noticed that your headaches seem to coincide with times of poor oral care? It might not be a coincidence at all.

Many people don't realize that migraines and oral health are often connected. Studies have shown that people who suffer from migraines are more likely to experience dental problems like gum disease and tooth decay.

Why does this happen? Well, there are a few possible explanations:

•  Poor oral hygiene can contribute to inflammation in the mouth, which may trigger headaches.
•  Dental problems such as gum disease and tooth decay can release bacteria into the bloodstream, which can also trigger headaches.
•  Migraines can cause muscle tension in the head and neck, which can lead to discomfort and pain in the jaw and teeth.

The good news is that there are things you can do to improve your oral health and reduce your risk of migraines.

Here are a few tips:

•  Brush your teeth twice a day and floss daily. This will help remove plaque and bacteria from your mouth.
•  See your dentist for regular checkups and cleanings. Your dentist can identify and treat any dental problems that may be contributing to your headaches.
•  Talk to your doctor about your migraines and how they might be related to your oral health.
•  Consider restorative dentistry options. If you have missing teeth or damaged teeth, these can put extra strain on your muscles and contribute to headaches. Restorative dentistry options, such as fillings, crowns, and bridges, can help to restore your teeth to their natural function and reduce discomfort.

By taking care of your oral health, you can improve your overall well-being and reduce your risk of migraines. If you have any questions, please talk to your dentist or doctor.
