TMJ/Neuromuscular

What Is Neuromuscular Dentistry?

Advanced training to care for more than just your dental health.

Neuromuscular dentists obtain specialized training beyond traditional dental education. A neuromuscular dentist has a deep understanding of the hard tissues, soft tissues, muscles, and nerves of the mouth and jaw. They understand these areas have a complex relationship.

Neuromuscular dentistry is focused on bringing balance to that relationship by determining the proper resting position of the jaw. It is the science of using the relaxed position of the muscles of the head and neck to place the jaw in its ideal physiologic position for optimal comfort and function.

TMJ Symptoms

Are you experiencing any of these common discomforts?

The TMJ is the joint that attaches the jaw to the skull, and when not properly aligned may cause an onset of symptoms.
•  Dizziness or vertigo
•  Muscle pain in the face, neck or shoulders
•  Pain when eating or talking
•  Stiff jaw
•  Ringing in the ears
•  Tingling in the hands
•  Migraine headaches
•  Clicking or popping of the jaw

Chandler patients experiencing the debilitating effects of TMJ disorder have often sought the help of physicians, physical therapists, and even neurologists without realizing their dentist may be their best course of resolution.

How Can Dr. Walker Help?

Get relief from your jaw pain by visiting our skilled TMJ dentist in Chandler, AZ.

Diagnosis

At Robert F. Walker Jr. DDS, we treat TMJ disorder using state-of-the-art TENS therapy and EMG and jaw tracking technology. This advanced equipment allows him to track the position of the jaw and surrounding muscles to determine their best position through your bite. The information gathered from the TENS and EMG jaw tracking units help him determine the best treatment plan for your relief.

Treatment

Treatment of TMJ may include adjusting the bite through orthotics, orthodontics, or restoring the teeth to their correct positions. Typically, treatment can be accomplished through a comfortable orthotic therapy. Dr. Walker stays on top of your progress with re-evaluation using the TENS unit. Orthodontics or restorative treatment options may be recommended in order to eliminate the orthotic permanently.
