Can Teeth Begin to Decay Before They Erupt?

What Happens During Tooth Development?

Baby teeth start to develop during the early stages of pregnancy. These tiny buds of tooth tissue slowly grow and mineralize until they are ready to erupt, which usually begins around six months of age. During this development process, the enamel, which is the hard, outer layer of your teeth, is particularly vulnerable to damage.

How Can Teeth Decay Before They Erupt?

One of the main culprits for early childhood tooth decay is a bacteria called Streptococcus mutans. This bacteria thrives on sugars and can produce acid as a byproduct. This acid can erode the developing enamel, leading to cavities.

If a pregnant mother has high levels of Streptococcus mutans in her mouth, she can pass it on to her baby during birth or through saliva. Once the baby's teeth start to erupt, the bacteria can colonize and begin to cause decay.

How Can You Prevent Early Childhood Tooth Decay?

The good news is that there are several things you can do to prevent early childhood tooth decay:

•  Practice good oral hygiene: Wipe your baby's gums with a clean, damp cloth after each feeding. Once their first tooth erupts, start brushing their teeth twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste.
•  Limit sugary foods and drinks: Avoid giving your baby sugary drinks like juice or soda. Limit their intake of sugary snacks and opt for healthy alternatives like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
•  Schedule regular dental checkups: Take your baby to the dentist for their first checkup by their first birthday or within six months of their first tooth erupting.

Prevention Dentistry: The Key to Healthy Teeth

By taking proactive steps, you can help prevent early childhood tooth decay and ensure your child has a healthy smile for years to come. Remember, prevention dentistry is always the best approach. It's much easier and less expensive to prevent cavities than to treat them once they develop.
