Periodontal Health - More Than Just Healthy Gums

Posted on 6/2/2025 by Robert F Walker Jr. PC
A woman smiling brightly in the dentist chair with a bib on, waiting for her first dental appointment. Many people think that dental health simply means brushing and flossing to prevent cavities. While this is important, it's only part of the picture. Periodontal health, which focuses on the health of your gums and the supporting structures of your teeth, is equally crucial for maintaining a healthy smile and overall well-being.

What is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, is an infection of the gums that damages the soft tissues and bones that support your teeth. It's caused by the buildup of plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that constantly forms on your teeth. If plaque isn't removed regularly, it can harden into tartar, which can only be removed by a dental professional.

Stages of Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease progresses through several stages:

•  Gingivitis: This is the mildest form of gum disease, characterized by red, swollen, and bleeding gums. Gingivitis is often painless, but it's important to treat it early to prevent it from progressing to more serious stages.
•  Periodontitis: As gingivitis progresses, the gums pull away from the teeth, creating pockets that become infected. This infection can damage the bones and ligaments that support your teeth, leading to tooth loss.
•  Advanced Periodontitis: In the most advanced stage of periodontal disease, the supporting bone and tissues are severely damaged, making it difficult to save the affected teeth.

Symptoms of Periodontal Disease

The early stages of periodontal disease often have no noticeable symptoms. However, as the disease progresses, you may experience:

•  Red, swollen, or bleeding gums
•  Tender or painful gums
•  Loose teeth
•  Pus between the teeth and gums
•  Bad breath
•  Changes in the way your teeth fit together when you bite

Importance of Periodontal Health

Periodontal disease not only affects your oral health but also has been linked to several serious health problems, including:

•  Heart disease
•  Stroke
•  Diabetes
•  Respiratory infections
•  Premature birth and low birth weight

Maintaining Periodontal Health

The good news is that periodontal disease is preventable and treatable. Here are some ways to maintain good periodontal health:

•  Brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes each time. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste.
•  Floss daily. Flossing removes plaque and food particles from between your teeth, where your toothbrush can't reach.
•  Schedule regular dental checkups and cleanings. Your dentist can remove plaque and tartar buildup, as well as check for early signs of periodontal disease.
•  Quit smoking. Smoking weakens your immune system and makes it harder for your body to fight off infection.

Conclusion

Taking care of your periodontal health is essential for maintaining a healthy smile and overall well-being. By following these simple tips, you can prevent and treat periodontal disease and keep your teeth healthy for a lifetime.
