Our orthopaedic (bony expansion and reshaping) appliances expand the bony arches the teeth set in. Teeth are comfortable in the middle of the bony arch so crowding is normally due to insufficient arch size. By doing expansion on the arches before placing the typical braces or brackets, the teeth are in a more stable position and less likely to relapse. We never want a patient to have teeth removed to make the necessary space for ideal alignment. By removing teeth and not expanding the arches you leave the patient much more vulnerable to TMJ dysfunction and collapsed airways that could lead to forward head posture, mouth breathing and Obstructive Sleep Apnea. Corrective expansion appliances are necessary for a health, long lasting smile and overall dental and physical health. |
