Tooth Extraction

Row of wooden tooth shapes, one of which is being pulled out of the row by dental pliersThe most common type of tooth extraction happens when teens and adults have their wisdom teeth removed. However, other problems like excessive tooth decay, tooth infection, and crowding may make it necessary for a tooth to be extracted as well. Our team at Robert F. Walker Jr. DDS can help you decide if you need a tooth extracted to help keep your smile healthy and happy.

Why Do I Need a Tooth Extraction?

A tooth extraction may be necessary for several reasons. If the wisdom teeth start to come in and there is not enough room in the back of the mouth for this, our dental team may decide to extract the tooth to avoid overcrowding in the mouth. If a tooth has an infection or is decaying, it may be best to pull the tooth out before it causes more damage to the rest of the mouth.

The good news is that when done by a professional in our dental office, the procedure for tooth extraction can be simple and easy. This is a quick outpatient procedure that will rely on local or general anesthesia most of the time. If the teeth become broken or are below the surface of the gums, it is possible the procedure will take a little longer.

How Can I Prepare for a Tooth Extraction?

Before the procedure is scheduled, a member of our team can prepare you for an x-ray to get a closer look at the tooth. Let us know of any medications you take, vitamins, or supplements beforehand. If you will be treated for other medical conditions that uses bisphosphonate, you need to get the extraction done first to avoid further complications.

The procedure for the tooth extraction can either be a simple extraction or a surgical extraction. When our team completes a simple extraction, we utilize local anesthesia. This is meant to numb up the mouth to alleviate pain and discomfort. We can then use elevators and forceps to get the tooth out.

The surgical treatment can take a little longer and you may also receive some intravenous anesthesia to help you stay calm. The dentist can then cut into the gums with a small incision before working to remove the tooth with as little damage as possible. They may also need to take out the bone that is near the tooth so they can complete the extraction.
